Later, with the encouragement of friends, Deborah joined the choir at 14 years old and began singing to audiences. As a teenager she knew singing was her destiny. She told her mother “If I don’t sing I feel like I’m going to die”. As she formed the vocal group Zola, with high school friends and sang background vocals for local brands. While in Zola she sang backup for Phillip Bailey and Denise Williams.
